Hearing Aid Dispensing

Hearing loss can affect anyone at any age, due to heredity, medical conditions or loud noise exposure. However, as we get older, we naturally become more susceptible to hearing loss because of changes to the delicate mechanics of our ears. This simple screening will help you identify a potential hearing problem. A hearing test provides an evaluation of the sensitivity of a person’s sense of hearing and is most often performed by an audiologist using an audiometer. An audiometer is used to determine a person’s hearing sensitivity at different frequencies. There are other hearing tests as well.

Hearing Tests

Your hearing health is just as important as your vision or your annual physical examination with your doctor. Left untreated, hearing loss can lead to social isolation and interpersonal issues that can affect your home, work, and social life. However, hearing health isn’t commonly screened by family physicians and often isn’t discussed, so you may not be aware that you need a hearing test.

Myringoplasty

A myringoplasty is an operation to repair a hole (perforation) in the eardrum. A perforation is usually caused by an infection in the middle ear that bursts through the eardrum. It can also be caused by trauma (for example, being hit across the ear). A perforated eardrum can lead to repeated ear infections and poorer hearing.

Stapes Surgeries

Stapes surgery can improve conductive hearing. This surgery is done to replace all or part of a damaged (fixated) stapes bone. You will be given general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation during surgery. The surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours. A diseased stapes bone The stapes bone may become affected by otosclerosis, an inherited middle ear disease. The disease creates spongy bone tissue. The tissue grows and hardens around the footplate (the part of the stapes that touches the inner ear). Hearing loss may result. Removing bone The first step of stapes surgery is removing the crura.

Mastoid Surgeries

A mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure that removes diseased mastoid air cells. The mastoid is the part of your skull located behind your ear. It’s filled with air cells made of bone and looks like a honey comb. The diseased cells are often the result of an ear infection that has spread into your skull. The procedure can also be used to remove an abnormal growth of the ear known as a cholesteatoma.
